Spending hours a day scrolling feeds in the hope of finding one trend to hop on for LOLs and RTs and ‘this brand is funny’ is very ineffective. These things are very rare. 30 minutes to an hour a day should give you a fair view of what’s trending and what’s not. Here’s what I do:

  1. I instead spend time creating trends for niche audiences of the brands I work with.

2. Secondly, I make a list of persons of interest who serve as sources that could help me create content or give some ideas. I typically view these sources via Hootsuite. Again, this is a lot of miss and not hit. People don’t live in silos where they only talk about one thing and one thing only. There’s a lot of unimportant stuff that I honestly don’t need to help me create content.

3. Important stuff in my niches will always get to me somehow, anyhow. Regardless of my interaction in the feed. It could come via colleagues or friends, maybe in the news even.

Bottom line: Dependency on feeds for your next piece of content is extremely unproductive.
